Footnotes interactive floor sculptures, vinyl on MDF, 2010 |
![]() |
The construction and function of colloquial expressions, and the sociopolitical implications embedded within them, is a fascinating aspect of language. This interactive piece uses numerous foot-based idiomatic expressions, such as “watch your step,” “drag your feet,” “put your foot down,” “on your toes,” “appropriate steps,” “foot in mouth,” and “shoestring budget.” Viewers are invited to kick the phrases around, thereby creating infinite combinations on the gallery floor. This piece explores concepts of social and physical mobility, set in motion by the viewer’s own feet. Foot related phrases point at mobility, such as “best foot forward,” “foot in the door,” and “kicked out.” Whereas a static lack of mobility is signified by phrases like “equal footing,” “standoff,” and “toe the line.” The title itself, Footnotes, implies a relegated status. |

“Race” has been an official question since the first Census in 1790 despite what scientists see as the dubiousness of the subject. We proceed as if this social construct were a solid concept. |

The Globo is a universal currency. A fusion of the legal tender of over twenty five countries, the Globo evokes a vision of world unity and progress, while simultaneously suggesting the ever-increasing reach of corporate globalization. The bills are distributed in the real-world economy, sparking disbelief and debate among those who receive them. As a result, The Globo is also an intervention into the culture at large. The Globo summons up the abstraction that underlies all money, and emphasizes the need to transform the stark inequalities of a globalized labor force. |
